Understanding the 9 Planets and 12 Houses in Vedic Astrology: A Beginner’s Guide

One of the foundational aspects of Vedic astrology (Jyotish Shastra) is the relationship between 9 planets (Navagrahas) and 12 houses (Bhavas). No matter which style of horoscope chart you look at—North Indian, South Indian, or East Indian—they all represent the same astrological data, just in different visual formats.

Once we understand the components and structure of a chart, we can move on to learning how to create a natal chart (Janma Kundli) and how to interpret it. But first, let’s get familiar with the basics.

Different Styles of Vedic Astrology Charts

Each regional chart style represents the same information but uses a different layout:

  • 🌟 1. North Indian Style (Diamond-shaped chart)

    • Structure: Diamond or kite-shaped chart.

    • Fixed Houses: The houses are fixed in position. The signs (Rāśis) rotate depending on the ascendant (Lagna).

    • Top Triangle: The triangle at the top is always the Ascendant (1st house).

    • Usage: Common in Delhi, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, etc.

Visual Tip: Looks like a diamond with smaller inner diamonds, very symmetrical..

  • 🌟 2. South Indian Style (Rectangular box chart)

    • Structure: Square chart divided into 12 rectangular boxes, arranged in a clockwise order.

    • Fixed Signs: The signs are fixed, and the houses change based on the ascendant.

    • Lagna Marking: The ascendant is marked by writing “Lagna” or by placing a planet name in the box that becomes the first house.

    • Usage: Common in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh.

Visual Tip: Very boxy and organized; the zodiac signs are in a set order, starting from Aries in a specific location.

  • 🌟 3. East Indian Style (Bengali/Odia chart)

    • Structure: Similar to South Indian but with a different arrangement.

    • Unique Shape: Often appears as a grid with diagonals or a modified square.

    • Sign and House Positions: Can vary slightly between Bengal, Odisha, and Assam traditions.

    • Usage: Common in West Bengal, Odisha, Assam.

Visual Tip: Often diagonally divided boxes, and usually written with Bengali/Odia numerals.

Despite their visual differences, all three chart styles display the same planetary positions and house placements—only the formatting changes.

Why Are the Houses Positioned This Way?

Good question. In Vedic astrology, the birth chart is considered a projection of time (Kaal Purusha)—a cosmic blueprint reflecting your past, present, and future. This philosophical concept is what gives the chart its layout, rather than arbitrary design.

Fascinating, isn’t it?

The 9 Planets in Vedic Astrology (Navagrahas)

Vedic astrology recognizes 9 celestial influencers, known as Grahas. While not all of them are "planets" in the modern astronomical sense, each Graha plays a vital role in shaping your personality, destiny, and karmic path.

Here are the Navagrahas:

  • Sun (Ravi)

  • Moon (Chandra)

  • Mars (Mangal)

  • Mercury (Budh)

  • Jupiter (Brihaspati)

  • Venus (Shukra)

  • Saturn (Shani)

  • Rahu (North Node of the Moon)

  • Ketu (South Node of the Moon)

πŸͺ Why are Rahu and Ketu considered planets?
In astronomy, Rahu and Ketu are not physical bodies—they're mathematical points where the moon's orbit intersects the ecliptic (called lunar nodes). Similarly, the Sun is a star and the Moon is a satellite. However, in Vedic astrology, the term “Graha” doesn’t mean "planet" as per astronomy. It translates to “the one who seizes or influences”, referring to their impact on human life.

The 12 Zodiac Signs (Rashis) and Houses (Bhavas)

Each Vedic horoscope is divided into 12 houses, each representing different areas of life—personality, wealth, communication, home, creativity, health, marriage, transformation, luck, career, social circles, and spiritual liberation.

Here are the 12 signs along with their ruling planets:

Zodiac Sign (Rashi)Sanskrit NameHouse Lord (Graha)

GeminiMithunMercury
CancerKarkaMoon

VirgoKanyaMercury

PiscesMeenaJupiter

Each house gets its sign and ruling planet in a default or dynamic way based on your ascendant (Lagna).

When interpreting a birth chart, two factors are crucial:

  1. The house (Bhava) a planet occupies.

  2. The ruler (lord) of that house and its placement elsewhere in the chart.

(We’ll dive deeper into the concept of Bhavas in future posts.)
