Branches of Vedic Astrology
Feeling Lost in the Ocean of Vedic Astrology? You’re Not Alone
Every time I sit down to write about Vedic astrology, I feel like I’m diving into a vast, endless ocean. There’s so much depth, so many layers, that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed—not knowing where to begin or how to bring structure to the wisdom passed down to me over the years.
Growing up with an astrologer father (though not a professional one), I was introduced to astrology early in life. I learned so much over time, but not in any specific order—just bits and pieces from conversations, observations, and teachings. And now, as I share this knowledge through this blog, I’m doing my best to make it as organized and understandable as possible.
If at any point while reading or learning, you feel lost—have faith. That’s the beauty of Vedic astrology. It might feel confusing in the beginning, but clarity comes with time, just like in life itself.
The Three Branches of Vedic Astrology
Vedic astrology—also known as Indian astrology or Hindu astrology—is traditionally divided into three main branches:
1. Siddhanta (Astronomical Foundations of Astrology)
Siddhanta deals with the astronomical aspect of astrology. In the Vedic tradition, astronomy and astrology were never considered separate disciplines. The movement of stars and planets was meticulously calculated, and those calculations were used to understand their influence on life on Earth.
You’ll find examples of Siddhantic calculations in the traditional Panjika (Hindu almanac), which is common in most Hindu households. It includes the lunar dates (tithis), moon phases, planetary positions, and transits—all crucial data derived from ancient mathematical systems.
2. Samhita (Astrology for Nations and Mass Events)
This branch focuses on collective destiny. Samhita deals with predictions about natural disasters, weather patterns, war and peace, agricultural yields, and even election results. It studies the fate of nations, communities, and global trends.
3. Hora (Individual Astrology – The Focus of This Blog)
This is where things get personal. Hora is the branch of astrology that explores individual destinies—your birth chart (natal chart), life predictions, career, relationships, health, and even answers to specific questions (Prashna Shastra).
In Vedic astrology, it’s not just the planets (grahas) that matter, but also their placement in specific houses (bhavas). There are multiple house systems and calculation methods within Indian astrology, with the two most prominent being the Parashara and Jaimini systems.
In this blog, we’ll focus on the Parashara system, which is more planet-centered than sign-centered (Rashi-specific). One of its core features is the Vimshottari Dasha system—a planetary timeline that maps out the key phases of your life.
What’s Coming Next
In the upcoming posts, I’ll begin from the very basics—introducing key concepts, terminology, and how you can start interpreting a birth chart. Whether you're a complete beginner or someone looking to deepen your understanding, my aim is to guide you step by step through the intricate yet fascinating world of Vedic astrology.
Stay tuned—and remember, even if the path seems complex, Jyotish is a journey of light and clarity.
